The La Pampa’s General Directorate of Consumer Protection shared recommendations to keep in mind when applying for credits or loans.

Currently, the levels of indebtedness and delinquency of Argentine families are at historic records since the lack of real wage recomposition and high interest rates have led to a payment crisis, the La Pampa’s Consumer Defense said.

Rights and care

The consumer has the right to receive information in writing, before signing or accepting the terms of purchase, regarding the amount, the total number of installments, interest rates, the total cost of financing, and any expenses, insurance, or any other additional costs that may exist.

The organization emphasized that documents (contracts, applications, promissory notes, etc.) containing blank spaces should not be signed, and that one should demand they be crossed out or completed with the corresponding information.

“You should save copies or screenshots of advertisements offering loans or financing for the purchase of goods or services in installments. Always keep all documentation provided, such as a copy of the contract and detailed receipts for all payments made. If the loan includes the possibility of early repayment, either partial or total, it is advisable to know the associated costs,” the Consumer Protection Agency advised.

Be careful with the amounts…

It’s important to keep in mind that obtaining a loan often involves using other products such as credit cards, for which you must pay fees that add to the total cost of the loan.

‘When requesting a loan, it is important to analyze your personal financial situation and know how much money you need and how it can be returned, so as not to ask for more, or in a longer term than desirable. It is essential to compare the different options on the market’, stated the agency belonging to the Ministry of Government and Municipal Affairs.

The user should verify that all the conditions disclosed by the financial institution when offering the loan are included in the contract. It’s crucial to review it thoroughly to avoid signing clauses you’re unaware of. Always request a copy of the contract and any other documents you sign.

Being in debt doesn’t mean losing your rights
#

  • Remember that having debt or being in arrears doesn’t mean losing your rights as a consumer, especially your right to receive fair treatment.

  • Some debt collection agencies send notices that appear to be legal action: only a judge can authorize the garnishment of wages or the seizure of assets. They also cannot collect a debt at the workplace, from family members, friends, or neighbors.

  • If you receive an extrajudicial debt collection notice, you should contact the issuing entity to verify the claim and request a detailed statement of the outstanding amount.
