The Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ARN) granted the La Pampa Regional Center for Radio Oncology an operating license, authorizing the application of brachytherapy treatments (high-dose-rate internal radiotherapy). This unique advancement in the region will initially eliminate the need for referrals and maximize the effectiveness of treatments for gynecological tumors, with plans to later extend to other specialties.

With this official authorization, the Center is formally authorized to perform High-Dose-Rate (HDR) brachytherapy treatments. This license complements the external radiotherapy services the center has been providing since its recent inauguration, strengthening its technological and medical offerings.

High-precision technology to improve treatments:

Modern radiotherapy is a fundamental pillar in the control and elimination of tumor cells. The incorporation of high-dose-rate brachytherapy allows for the direct and selective application of ionizing radiation to the tumor volume, drastically minimizing the impact on surrounding healthy tissues. This translates into optimal disease control and significantly better clinical tolerance for the patient.

To achieve this, the Regional Center has a specialized surgical and planning area equipped with a unique HDR Brachytherapy system in the region. This procedure—which takes only a few minutes—maximizes tumor cell destruction while minimizing exposure to adjacent organs at risk. As it is an outpatient procedure, it allows the patient to be discharged and return home within a few hours.

The Provincial Minister of Health, Mario Rubén Kohan, highlighted the impact of this achievement, which aligns with the goals set by the Provincial Executive: “As Governor Sergio Ziliotto announced during the inauguration, the center began operating with external radiotherapy treatments. Today, thanks to this authorization from the ARN (National Radiological Authority), we are taking a qualitative leap toward High Dose Rate Brachytherapy. We are starting with gynecological treatments, but the infrastructure is designed for a progressive expansion to other oncological pathologies.”

Similarly, Kohan explained that “to safeguard this service, the Center has been equipped with a unique internal infrastructure: an exclusive operating room dedicated to these treatments, a double patient recovery room and its own sterilization sector.”

He explained that “the instruments used in brachytherapy are extremely sensitive and precise. By processing them within the Center itself, under the strict control of our professionals, we eliminate the risk of damage to complex supplies, safeguarding the service and ensuring that no treatment is interrupted due to logistical issues.”

Being able to complete this stage of treatment within La Pampa province radically transforms the patient experience. The possibility of receiving cutting-edge care without leaving the province reduces psychological uncertainty, protects family finances, and allows people to go through their recovery surrounded by their loved ones.
“In this way, through highly efficient outpatient procedures, high-dose-rate brachytherapy will maximize therapeutic effectiveness. Patients will be able to return home the same day, with the assurance of receiving the highest level of scientific medicine in their own province,” Kohan concluded.
