A paleontological find of enormous relevance occurred in the last few hours in the oil zone of 25 de Mayo. Removing sediments, the team from the Provincial Museum of Natural History of La Pampa found remains of a herbivorous dinosaur about 15 to 20 meters long and weighing about 10 tons that lived in the area about 70 million years ago.

The discovery occurred in a place known as Colonia Chica. “We are a team of seven people who are working here, within the framework of the Provincial Law for the Protection of the Archaeological and Paleontological Heritage of La Pampa,” the director of the Provincial Museum of Natural History, Daniel Pincén, told to the Provincial News Agency from the site of the discovery.

“We had prospected this area last year because we saw a lot of potential. It is a somewhat inhospitable place, but it can be reached with some ease,” said Pincén, happy with the finding, of which the paleontologist from General Acha city, Juan Porfiri, gave more details.

“It is a finding of enormous relevance because it positions La Pampa among the provinces with the greatest paleontological richness in the country,” said Porfiri, who received a doctorate in Biology from the National University of Comahue and is now coordinator and professor at the National University of Comahue.

It’s a 10-ton sauropod?

“It is a herbivorous dinosaur. It is a sauropod with a long neck and tail. We have found remains of ribs and legs, but we continue to remove sediments in search of more pieces. Apparently it is an animal of the Titanosaur family,” said the professional. According to early estimates, this animal is believed to have been 15 to 20 meters long and weighed between 8 and 12 tons.

All the samples collected will then be analyzed in the laboratories of the National University of Comahue to determine the precise characteristics of the animal found. New search work will also be carried out in the area, because it is prospected especially for its potential wealth.

The team that is working in the area is made up of Lucía Liria, Federico Poblete, Juan Porfiri, (all of them from the National University of Comahue); Ricardo Cholino (Geomining Museum of 25 de Mayo), Lucas Cheme Arriaga, Pablo Tejerina and Daniel Pincén (all three from the Provincial Museum of Natural History)

“We have to thank the Government of La Pampa for its permanent support, through the Secretariats of Energy and Mining, Culture and the Municipality of 25 de Mayo,” Pincén said.
