Here are some simple tips, based on research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help support your well-being as you age:
Stay physically active #
Whether it’s walking, dancing, stretching, or moderately training your muscle strength, physical movement helps maintain balance, strength, and heart health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week, along with muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week.
Eat a balanced diet #
Choose foods that are rich in nutrients, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat proteins, and healthy fats. Drink enough water and try to limit salt, sugar, and highly processed foods. Check out MyPlate for tips and tools to help you plan healthy, balanced meals that fit your family’s preferences and traditions.
Keep Your Mind Active #
Keeping your brain active is important. Read, put together puzzles, learn something new, or play music to help support memory and mental acuity.
Stay Socially Connected #
Strong relationships help support emotional health. Stay in touch with friends and family, join a group in your community or church, volunteer, or go to local events.
Take care of your mental health #
Set aside time for activities that help you relax, such as meditation and deep breathing; or cultivate a spirit of gratitude in the face of life and have positive thoughts. If you feel discouraged or overwhelmed, seek support. It’s okay to ask for help!
Keep your health care up to date #
Regular checkups and early diagnostic tests can find health problems early. Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor and follow your health care provider’s recommendations.
Avoid unnecessary risks #
Protect your skin from the sun, avoid tobacco, limit alcohol consumption, and make your home safer to help prevent falls.
