The work, carried out by a team of specialists from the Departamento de Control Metrológico de Tanques Fijos de Almacenamiento, represents a milestone for both the institute and the country’s oil industry. This time, it is the largest tank calibrated by INTI recorded to date and belongs to the company OTAMERICA - Oiltanking Ebytem S.A.
The calibration of storage tanks is a key step to ensure accurate measurements in the oil sector, as even the smallest inaccuracies can lead to significant economic deviations, resulting in losses of millions of dollars. In this regard, the INTI participation provides confidence in the accuracy of the stored volumes and reinforces traceability throughout the entire oil value chain, the institution said.
This enormous reservoir will play a crucial role in receiving oil from the Neuquén basin in Vaca Muerta. Its operation represents a fundamental step in the logistics of exporting Argentine unconventional crude, consolidating Puerto Rosales as a nerve center for the exit of national oil to international markets.
“It is an honor that a company like Oiltanking Ebytem S.A. trusts INTI to carry out this task. Behind each calibration, there are decades of experience, technological development, and a highly trained technical team,” highlighted Juan Pablo Crivari, head of the Departamento de Control Metrológico de Tanques y Contadores de Petróleo at the institute.
The expansion of the storage infrastructure at Puerto Rosales, led by Oiltanking, includes six new tanks installation, a pumping station, an electrical substation, and a dock with three berthing positions, thus consolidating the strategic role of this terminal in the overseas export of unconventional oil.
“An expansion project is being carried out that represents a significant milestone in the development of the Puerto Rosales Storage Terminal. The project includes several stages and the use of key components, which will allow it to become the export point for Argentine oil, especially that coming from ‘Vaca Muerta’, to the world,” stated Guillermo Blanco, vice president of the private oil company.
“Faced with this challenge, it is crucial to find institutions that certify, in relation to the oil market, that our work was done according to the standards specific to our activity. We not only work with excellence and total commitment, but we also ensure that this result is properly demonstrated. We thank INTI for collaborating with us on this central project for the growth of Argentina,” he concluded. In this context, INTI continues to contribute its expertise to ensure compliance with international measurement and quality standards.
According to INTI, Puerto Rosales plays a prominent role in the country’s energy infrastructure. From this point, ships arriving from Comodoro Rivadavia transport heavy oil (known as “Escalante”), essential for supplying the main Argentine refineries. Additionally, light oil (“Medanito”), extracted from the Neuquén basin of Vaca Muerta, is also exported through this vantage point site.
The tanks’s calibration in Puerto Rosales represents another example of the key role that INTI try to play in strengthening the Argentine energy sector.
