On the one hand, expressions like &ldquo;medieval barbarism&rdquo; or &ldquo;darkness&rdquo; are still widely used in the media to describe violent events or the loss of human rights. This is countered by politically motivated reinterpretations that emphasize the intellectual, scientific, and artistic advancements of the period: its renaissances , the surviving classical legacy, and the beauty of its cathedrals.
